About the event
For nearly the past decade, the community engagement nonprofit Barrio Alegría has dedicated itself to empowering Reading neighbors, creating pathways to self-actualization for artists, and transforming the city of Reading into a beautiful and welcoming home for newcomers and lifelong residents alike. In eight years’ time, the group has evolved from a dance troupe of friends into a trusted community hub that is setting the bar for others who aim to make a meaningful, lasting impact in people’s lives. Just last year, we held more than 119 events with objectives such as building community, giving financial knowledge to young adults, and improving our neighborhoods. We had more than 1,300 hours of volunteer work from community members who want to see a thriving Reading. We contracted nearly 100 community artists and instructors to share their skills with the public. And our micro-loans had a 97 percent payback rate from small business and entrepreneur borrowers.
We are looking for people who share our vision to match our efforts, allies who know the potential of this place and trust the creative and mindful actions of Barrio. From day one, we have fundraised to do this work, securing in-kind donations, and setting up a fundraiser called Barrio Lights. Through Barrio Lights we are able to keep this work moving and with your sponsorship, we can take it to a whole new reality.
Your contribution to Barrio Alegría will ensure the work we have laid the foundation for since 2015 will be able to reach more folks who have long gone unheard and forgotten. Your kindness reaches further than free hand-outs and celebratory gatherings; it echoes through the one-way streets and alleyways, reverberating through the hearts of our neighbors and becomes the soundtrack to a life they thought could only be a dream.
