About the event
For nearly the past decade, the community engagement nonprofit Barrio Alegría has dedicated itself to empowering Reading neighbors, creating pathways to self-actualization for artists, and transforming the city of Reading into a beautiful and welcoming home for newcomers and lifelong residents alike. In eight years’ time, the group has evolved from a dance troupe of friends into a trusted community hub that is setting the bar for others who aim to make a meaningful, lasting impact in people’s lives. Just last year, we held more than 119 events with objectives such as building community, giving financial knowledge to young adults, and improving our neighborhoods. We had more than 1,300 hours of volunteer work from community members who want to see a thriving Reading. We contracted nearly 100 community artists and instructors to share their skills with the public. And our micro-loans had a 97 percent payback rate from small business…
